1 Tbsp
grated lemon rind
8 slice
french bread, thick
1 c
bread crumbs
2 large
tart apples, peeled, cored, sliced
2 c
1 Tbsp
lemon juice
sliced smoked bratwurst links (8 ounces)
1/4 c
minced onion
8 tsp
sugar cinnamon mixture
maple syrup

How to Make German French Toast


  • 1Preheat oven to 425.
  • 2Whisk together milk, egg yolks and lemon rind.
  • 3Soak bread slices in egg mixture until saturated.
  • 4Whisk egg whites until frothy.
  • 5Dip soaked bread in whites and then dredge in bread crumbs.
  • 6Arrange on greased cookie sheet and bake for 15 minutes.
  • 7Remove, turn over and return to oven for 10 minutes longer.
  • 8While toast is baking, place apple slices in small saucepan with the 2 cups water and lemon juice.
  • 9Bring to a boil and remove from heat.
  • 10Saute bratwurst and onions together until crispy brown.
  • 11To serve, sprinkle toast with sugar/cinnamon mixture, cover with cooked, drained apple slices, sauteed bratwurst and onions.
  • 12Serve with maple syrup.
