Ingredients
- 1 Kaiser roll
- 2 large eggs
- 2 slices American cheese
- 1 tablespoon butter, divided
- 1 pinch salt and freshly ground black pepper
- ketchup or hot sauce, optional
How To Make egg and cheese
-
Step 1Toast the roll: Slice the kaiser roll in half. Melt about 1/2 tablespoon of the butter in a skillet over medium heat. Place the roll halves, cut-sides down, into the skillet and cook until lightly golden brown, about 2–3 minutes. Set the toasted roll halves aside.
-
Step 2Cook the eggs: Wipe the skillet clean if needed, then reduce the heat to low/medium-low. Melt the remaining 1/2 tablespoon of butter in the pan. Crack the eggs into a small bowl, whisk with salt and pepper, then pour them into the skillet.
-
Step 3Add the cheese: As the eggs cook, use a spatula to gently pull the edges toward the center, allowing the uncooked egg to flow underneath. When the eggs are nearly set but the top is still a little wet, place the cheese slices on top.
-
Step 4Assemble the sandwich: Use a spatula to fold the cheesy eggs into a compact square or triangle packet. Slide the egg and cheese onto the bottom half of the toasted roll. Add any optional condiments like ketchup and top with the other half of the roll.
-
Step 5Serve: For an authentic deli experience, wrap the assembled sandwich tightly in parchment or wax paper for a minute or two to let it steam before cutting in half and serving warm.
