This is a fantastic grits casserole that's taken to another level. Onions add great flavor, while the cheese makes it nice and creamy. An easy casserole for a weekend breakfast or brunch. It's filled with ingredients people love. Add fresh fruit for a great meal.
sausage patties or your favorite healthy substitute
Mexican blend shredded cheese
salt (to taste)
pepper (to taste)
butter or substitute
How To Make southern sausage egg casserole
Test Kitchen Tips
1/2 cup of grits yields 2 cups of cooked grits.
Preheat oven to 350 degrees.
In a separate pot, cook grits approx 20 minutes, adding butter and salt to taste.
Cook sausage patties in pan on medium-high heat. After cooking sausage patties, chop them up in bite-size pieces.
Add chopped onion, saute until soft.
In a bowl, break eggs and stir well with fork.
In a 9x13 baking dish, layer sausage, onions, chopped tomato, and shredded cheese. (in that order)
Stir in grits and add eggs.
Put in oven at 350 for 30 minutes. Take out and let set for 5 minutes.
