    2 1/2 cups flour
  • ·
    1 1/2 cups packed light brown sugar
  • ·
    1 tbsp. shredded orange peel
  • ·
    1/2 t. salt
  • ·
    1/2 t. ground mace
  • ·
    1/2 cup butter or margarine
  • ·
    2 t. baking powder
  • ·
    1/2 t. baking soda
  • ·
    1 egg, beaten
  • ·
    3/4 cup buttermilk
  • ·
    1/2 t. ground cinnamon
  • ·
    1/3 cup chopped walnuts

How to Make Sweet Breakfast Bread

Step-by-Step

  1. Combine flour, brown sugar, orange peel, salt and mace in a mixing bowl; cut in
    butter until mixture resembles coarse crumbs. Measure 1/3 cup and set it aside.
  2. Add baking powder and soda to remaining crumbs. Combine egg and buttermilk; add
    to flour mixture, stirring until well mixed. Turn into a greased 9" square
    baking pan. Add cinnamon and walnuts to reserved crumbs; sprinkle evenly over
    batter.
  3. Bake in a 400 oven for 45 to 55 minutes or until a wooden pick inserted
    in center comes out clean. Makes 9 to 12 servings
