My grandfather was from Sweden and every Christmas my grandmother would make loaves and loaves of this bread to give to people. It's a slightly sweet bread and so yummy! The prep time is an estimate. Y'all know that sometimes bread takes longer to rise than you anticipate! :) Makes two loaves.

prep time 3 Hr
cook time 35 Min
method Bake
yield 16-20 serving(s)

Ingredients

  • 1 package active dry yeast
  • 1/4 cup water, warm
  • 1 1/2 cups milk, whole
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 20 - cardamon seeds, ground
  • 6 cups all purpose flour
  • 1 stick butter

How To Make swedish bread

  • Step 1
In a large mixing bowl, dissolve the yeast in the warm water.
  • Step 2
Melt butter in saucepan and stir in milk. Pour the lukewarm mixture into the yeast.
  • Step 3
Stir in the salt, sugar and cardamon.
  • Step 4
Gradually add the flour and work the dough until smooth and well blended. (Depending on the humidity of the day, you may need a little less flour or a little more.)
  • Step 5
Cover the bowl and let rise 1 hour.
  • Step 6
Turn the dough onto a lightly floured surface and knead until smooth and shiny.
  • Step 7
Divide into two portions and shape into loaves. Place into greased loaf pans, cover and let rise until doubled in size.
  • Step 8
Bake at 350 degrees for 30-40 minutes.
  • Step 9
(Optional) Brush tops with a sugar water mixture.
