portugese sweet bread
(1 RATING)
This is the recipe my BFF Peggy and I used to make this delicious bread when she visited me from Ipswich, Ma. in 2007. I hope you enjoy making and tasting it as much as we did!

Ingredients
- 1 package active dry yeast
- 1/2 cup sugar
- 1/4 cup butter, softened
- 1/4 cup milk, warm
- 2 large eggs, lightly beaten
- 1/2 tablespoon salt
- 2 1/4 cups bread flour
How To Make portugese sweet bread
-
Step 1Combine yeast, 1/2 t sugar and water in warm water in bowl and stir to mix. Put butter in warm milk, add remaining sugar, mix well. Add to yeast mixture and stir to combine. Reserve small amount of beaten egg for glaze, add remaining eggs and salt to yeast mixture and mix well. Add 2 cups of flour, one cup at a time, kneading into soft dough. Turn onto floured board, knead until smooth and elastic, using only buttered bowl, turn to coat. Cover and let rise until doubled.
-
Step 2Punch down, shape into ball and place in oven-safe buttered skillet or bread pan. Cover and let rise until doubled. Brush top with remaining well beaten egg and bake at 350 for about 30 minutes , until bread is a rich, dark, shining color and sounds hollow when rapped with knuckles.
