One of my middle sister's favorites when we were growing up. She liked it toasted and buttered for breakfast.

Ingredients

  • 2 cups sugar
  • 1 cup butter, melted
  • 1/4 cup molasses
  • 2 teaspoons ground ginger
  • 1 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1 teaspoon ground cloves
  • 1 pinch salt
  • 2 teaspoons baking soda
  • 2 cups buttermilk
  • 2 large eggs
  • 3 cups all-purpose flour
  • whipped cream or ice cream

How To Make old fashioned gingerbread

  • Step 1
Combine the first 8 ingredients (through salt) in a large mixing bowl; stir well.
  • Step 2
Dissolve the baking soda in the buttermilk. Add to the sugar mixture, beating well at medium speed of an electric mixer until blended.
  • Step 3
Add the eggs, one at a time, beating after each addition. Add the flour, and beat until blended.
  • Step 4
Pour the batter into a greased and floured 13 x 9 x 2 inch baking pan. Use a greased and floured tube pan if you want to slice and toast for breakfast. Bake at 350º for 45 to 50 minutes or until a wooden pick inserted in the center comes out clean. Cool on a wire rack. Serve with whipped cream or ice cream, if desired.
