old fashioned gingerbread
(1 RATING)
One of my middle sister's favorites when we were growing up. She liked it toasted and buttered for breakfast.

Ingredients
- 2 cups sugar
- 1 cup butter, melted
- 1/4 cup molasses
- 2 teaspoons ground ginger
- 1 teaspoon ground nutmeg
- 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- 1 teaspoon ground cloves
- 1 pinch salt
- 2 teaspoons baking soda
- 2 cups buttermilk
- 2 large eggs
- 3 cups all-purpose flour
- whipped cream or ice cream
How To Make old fashioned gingerbread
-
Step 1Combine the first 8 ingredients (through salt) in a large mixing bowl; stir well.
-
Step 2Dissolve the baking soda in the buttermilk. Add to the sugar mixture, beating well at medium speed of an electric mixer until blended.
-
Step 3Add the eggs, one at a time, beating after each addition. Add the flour, and beat until blended.
-
Step 4Pour the batter into a greased and floured 13 x 9 x 2 inch baking pan. Use a greased and floured tube pan if you want to slice and toast for breakfast. Bake at 350º for 45 to 50 minutes or until a wooden pick inserted in the center comes out clean. Cool on a wire rack. Serve with whipped cream or ice cream, if desired.
