Ingredients

  • 4 cups all purpose flour
  • 1 tablespoon sugar
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 cup butter
  • 1 cup seedless raisins (aren't all raisins seedless - ok mom - lol!)
  • 1 3/4 cups buttermilk

How To Make *** mom's irish soda bread ***

  • Step 1
    Preheat oven to 375 degrees F.
  • Step 2
    In a large bowl sift together flour through salt. Use pastry blender & but butter in until crumbly. Stir in raisins. Add buttermilk & stir until mixture is combined & forms a soft dough.
  • Step 3
    Turn out onto a floured surface. Gather dough into a ball & knead 6 - 8 turns until dough holds together. Shape into a 7" round dish & place on ungreased bake sheet.
  • Step 4
    Cut 1" deep X across top of bread & bake 40 - 45 minutes until brown. Bread should sound hollow when tapped on bottom.
  • Step 5
    Let cool on a rack.
