  • 1 cup minus 2 tablespoon milk
  • 1 1/2 tablespoons sugar
  • 3 1/3 cups all purpose flour
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon cream of tartar
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 pinch ground ginger

How To Make irish treacle or grandma's molasses bread

  • Step 1
Heat the molasses and milk together in a saucepan. In a medium bowl mix all dry ingredients together. Add milk until a soft dough is achieved. You may not need all the milk. With floured hands, shape into a round cake-like loaf about 1 1/2 inches thick. Cut across the top only about 1/2 down into farls (quarters), put on a floured baking sheet, sprinkle a little flour on top, and bake at 400 degrees for 40 minutes.
