  • 2 c
    unsifted flour
  • 2 Tbsp
  • 1/2 tsp
  • 2 tsp
    baking powder
  • 1 tsp
    baking soda
  • 1/2 c
  • 1 Tbsp
    caraway seeds
  • 3 Tbsp
    butter, softened
  • 1 c

How to Make Irish Soda Bread


  1. Preheat oven to 375F
    Lightly grease a cookie sheet or use parchment paper
  2. Sift first five ingredients into a large bowl
    Add raisins and caraway seeds
    Cut in softened butter
    Add buttermilk
    Mix with a fork until moistened
  3. Move dough to a lightly floured surface
    Knead until smooth; tacky but not sticky (a little may need to be added)
    Shape into a ball
  4. Put on the cookie sheet
    Flatten to a seven inch mound
    Make a crosscut in the dough being careful not to cut even halfway through
    Bake 30-40 minutes until tapping the surface makes a hollow sound
  5. Serve immediately or wrap in a linen towel to keep
    Serves well plain or with butter
