Ingredients

  • 2 cups unsifted flour
  • 2 tablespoons sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/2 cup raisins
  • 1 tablespoon caraway seeds
  • 3 tablespoons butter, softened
  • 1 cup buttermilk

How To Make irish soda bread

  • Step 1
    Preheat oven to 375F Lightly grease a cookie sheet or use parchment paper
  • Step 2
    Sift first five ingredients into a large bowl Add raisins and caraway seeds Cut in softened butter Add buttermilk Mix with a fork until moistened
  • Step 3
    Move dough to a lightly floured surface Knead until smooth; tacky but not sticky (a little may need to be added) Shape into a ball
  • Step 4
    Put on the cookie sheet Flatten to a seven inch mound Make a crosscut in the dough being careful not to cut even halfway through Bake 30-40 minutes until tapping the surface makes a hollow sound
  • Step 5
    Serve immediately or wrap in a linen towel to keep Serves well plain or with butter
