The texture is like a scone, and it's slightly sweet. Serve with butter and jam, or plain.

Ingredients

  • 2 1/2 cups flour
  • 3 tablespoons sugar
  • 2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/3 cup butter, cold unsalted
  • 1 1/4 cups buttermilk
  • 1/2 cup currants or raisins

How To Make irish soda bread

  • Step 1
Heat oven to 375 and grease a small baking sheet. Mix all dry ingredients, then cut in butter until it is crumbly and incorporated.
  • Step 2
Add fruit, mix through, and then stir in buttermilk. Put a little flour on a flat surface (it's small enough to use a dinner plate for this), and turn the bread out over the flour. Knead a few times until it's a cohesive ball.
  • Step 3
Place onto greased baking sheet and form into a 6 inch round. Cut a deep (about 3/4 inch) deep "X" onto top of bread. Bake for 30-35 minutes.
