Ingredients

  • 2 cups warm water
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 dash nutmeg
  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 2 - eggs
  • 1/4 teaspoon lemon extract
  • 1/2 cup melted lard (lard only)
  • 2 packages yeast
  • 1/2 cup warm water
  • 5 cups flour
  • - sugar
  • - cinnamon

How To Make german coffee cake

  • Step 1
    Dissolve yeast in warm water.
  • Step 2
    Place first 7 ingredients (everything but yeast) in mixer bowl, beat well. Add 3 cups white flour. Continue beating. When well mixed, add dissolved yeast. Add 2 more cups flour, 1 c. at a time. Stil until mixer cannot handle the dough.
  • Step 3
    Pour out on floured board, knead, adding a small amt of flour as needed. When the dough is no longer sticky, pat into a round mold. Place in warm spot to raise till doubled. Punch down.
  • Step 4
    Make into loaves, but only as thick as an inch. Punch holes into dough. Pat with lard. Sprinkle with generous amount of white sugar, then sprinkle with cinnamon. Cover. Let rise until doubled. Bake 40-45 minutes @ 350 degrees.
