One of my dearest friends always makes this at Christmas to give as gifts for her neighbors and friends. Everyone looks forward to this.

makes 4 small loaves or 3 larger loaves

Ingredients

Add to Grocery List

1 1/2 lbs. dates
1 1/2 tsp. baking soda
3/4 cup butter or margarine
3 cups sugar
3 eggs
dash salt
1 1/2 chopped nuts
1 1/2 tsp. vanilla
3 cups flour

How to Make Date and Nut Bread

Step-by-Step

  • 1Cut up dates in a bowl, cover with 1 1/2 cups hot water (from the tap) and baking soda. Set aside.
  • 2In another bowl, cream butter and sugar. Add eggs and mix well. Add salt, nuts and vanilla and mix well. Add dates and liquid. Then add flour and mix well.
  • 3Bake in greased and floured loaf pans in 350 degree oven. Bake for 40 to 55 minutes or until toothpick comes out clean.
  • 4Cool 20 to 25 minutes.
    Freezes well.
