Ingredients

1/2 c
cut up dates
1
4 ounce german chocolate bar
3 c
boiled water
3 tsp
baking soda
2 1/2 c
sugar
1/2 c
butter or margarine
3
eggs
4 1/2 c
all purpose flour
1 pinch
salt
1 c
chopped walnuts or pecans
3 tsp
vanilla extract
1 1/2 c
maraschino cherries, cut in half

Step-By-Step

1Preheat oven to 350 degrees.
2Dissolve soda in hot water and pour over dates and chocolate. Let stand to cool.
3Cream sugar, butter, and eggs. Add cooled date and water mixture alternately with flour.
4Add nuts, vanilla and cherries. Batter is thin.
5Grease and flour bread pans, fill 1/2 full.
6Bake 50-60 minutes or until tests done with a pick.
