This is so easy and tastes great right out of the oven.Chocolate adds a bit of sweatness too. This makes one loaf and is great for any meal.

  • 4 c
    all purpose flour
  • 1/4 c
  • 3 tsp
    baking powder
  • 1 tsp
    baking soda
  • 1 tsp
  • 1/4 c
    butter, softened
  • 1 c
  • 1/2 c
    semi-sweet chocolate chips
  • 1 1/3 c
    buttermilk or milk
  • 1
  • 1
    egg yolk
  • 1 Tbsp

How to Make Chocolate Irish Soda Bread


  1. Combine in bowl flour,sugar,baking powder, baking soda and salt. Using 2 knives,cut in butter until mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
  2. Stir in raisins and chocolate chips.
  3. In a bowl combine milk and egg and beat well. Add to flour mixture and stir till dry ingredients are moistened.
  4. On floured surface knead dough about 3 minutes and then shape into flattened ball.
  5. Place on greased cookie sheet or baking pan to fit.Put an X on top of dough with a sharp knife about 1/2 inch deep.
  6. Combine egg yolk and water and brush on top of bread.
  7. Bake at 375 degrees for 50-60 minutes till golden.
