My mother used to make this delicious bread every year at Christmas time. She was a fabulous cook. I truly don't remember anything she made turning out badly. Needless to say, I had a great teacher! :)

    zest of one lemon
  • 1 Tbsp
    baking powder
  • 1 1/2 c
  • 2
  • 1/2 tsp
  • 1/2 c
    milk, whole
  • 1/2 c
    walnut pieces (optional)

  • 1/2 c
  • ·
    juice of 1 lemon

How to Make Canadian Lemon Bread


  1. Cream shortening and sugar together until creamy.
  2. Add eggs and milk, mix well.
  3. Add salt,baking powder, and flour, mix well.
  4. Fold in lemon zest.
  5. Pour into greased, 1-quart, bread pan and let rise for 20 minutes.
  6. Bake at 350 degrees F for 45 minutes, or until done.
  7. When still warm, remove from pan and brush the top and sides with the glaze.
  8. The glaze should be made and left to stand while the bread is baking.
