  • 1/4 c
    unbleached flour, sifted
  • 1/2 tsp
    baking powder
  • 1 tsp
  • 1/2 c
    active sourdough starter
  • 3/4 c
  • 1 c
    dates, chopped
  • 1 c
    all-bran cereal
  • 1 tsp
    grated lemon peel
  • 2 large
  • 1/4 c
    vegetable oil
  • 3/4 c
    firmly packed brown sugar

How to Make Bran Date Bread


  1. Sift dry ingredients together.
  2. Dust dates with 1 tablespoon flour mixture, then add to the bowl.
  3. Then add the brown sugar, all bran, and grated lemon peel.
  4. Combine 3/4 cup buttermilk, 2 beaten eggs and 1/4 cup vegetable oil.
  5. Add all at once to flour mixture with the sourdough starter, stirring until well moistened.
  6. Pour into greased or waxpaper lined loaf pan about 9 x 5-inches.
  7. Bake at 350 degrees for 1 hour.
  8. Allow to stand 10 minutes in pan and then remove from pan and cool until cold.
