My mother's side of the family is from Croatia. This bread is a family favorite that has been made for many generations. We mostly make it for the major holidays and big family get-togethers. It is literally gone within 15 minutes of pulling it out for everyone to eat.

Blue Ribbon Recipe

Yum! This savory bread is delicious. We loved the onions cooked with the bacon. It gave a sweet flavor to the onion and richness to the prisnats. They're moist and creamy, like a hearty quiche. This Croatian dish would be great for brunch or a dinner appetizer. Test Kitchen Avatar The Test Kitchen

    onion
  • 1 bunch
    green onion
  • 1
    dozen eggs
  • 1 pkg
yeast dissolved in 1 cup warm (110) water
  • 1 Tbsp
    salt
  • 16 oz
    cottage cheese
  • ·
about 3 cups of all-purpose flour

How to Make Prisnats

Step-by-Step

  1. Cook onions and bacon until onions are transparent.
  2. Drain and set aside until cool.
  3. Beat eggs until foamy. Add yeast mixture, salt, cottage cheese and bacon-onion mixture.
  4. Fold together, do not mix.
  5. Slowly add 1 cup of flour at a time.
  6. It should look thick like cake batter.
  7. Grease and flour 2 bread pans or 1 9x13 cake pan.
  8. Pour batter into the pan. Bake at 350 degrees for 1 hour.
  9. If it starts to smell really yummy check it. If the top is a nice golden color stick a toothpick in it. If nothing runny comes out it's finished. All ovens are different so you'll have to start watching it as the aroma fills your house.
