My mother made this cornbread all the time. people asked her for the recipe often.

self-rising cornmeal(white)
3 Tbsp
self-rising flour
1 1/2 c
buttermilk
add enough water to make the batter soupy...once batter is mixed let sit and do not stir.

Step-by-Step

  • 1Preheat oven to 450 degrees. Add 1 heaping tablespoon of shortening to cast iron skillet and place in oven until very hot.
  • 2Without stirring cornbread batter, pour into hot skillet and bake until golden brown.
