Ingredients

  • 2 cups warm water
  • 2 teaspoons granulated sugar
  • 2 1/4 teaspoons dry active yeast
  • 2 teaspoons salt
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 5 cups bread flour
  • 1 large egg

How To Make homemade french baguette

  • Step 1
Combine the water, sugar, and yeast in a bowl. Let it sit about 10 minutes until active and bubbly.
  • Step 2
In a stand mixer fitted with a dough hook, add 4 cups of flour, the salt, and oil.
  • Step 3
Pour the liquid into the flour mixture and mix on low speed. Add remaining flour 1/4 cup at a time until the dough pulls away from the bowl.
  • Step 4
Continue to knead the dough in the bowl until the dough is smooth.
  • Step 5
Oil a bowl and add the dough to the bowl. Cover with a dish towel or plastic wrap and let sit 1 hour.
  • Step 6
Roll the dough out on a floured surface and divide it in half. Roll the dough into a rectangle and place it on a baguette pan or baking sheet.
  • Step 7
Cover and let rise another hour.
  • Step 8
Preheat oven to 400 degrees. Use a sharp knife and cut slits in the top of the dough.
  • Step 9
Place the dough in the oven and throw in a few ice cubes and shut the oven. Bake 10 minutes.
  • Step 10
Mix the egg with a little water and brush it on the loaves.
  • Step 11
Place back in the oven for 10 more minutes or until nice and brown.
  • Step 12
Remove from the oven and let cool. Slice.
