Mark's family recipe....if 1 yeast cake is 1 pkg active dry yeast, what the hell is 1 large yeast cake????

  • 9 c
    flour
  • 1 lg
    yeast cake, translates to 1 1/2 packet minimum but 2 packets active dry yeast is best
  • 1/2 lb
    longhorn cheese (this is a brand, mark says use sharp cheddar cheeses)
  • 1 c
    sugar
  • 1 c
    milk
  • 3
    eggs
  • 1/2 tsp
    salt
  • 1 c
    boiling water
  • 1 stick
    butter, melted

    Place flour in a large bowl and make a well. In the center, crumble the yeast. Combine the water and milk. Add the mixture to the yeast and flour. Knead the sugar with the cheeses, salt, eggs, and melted butter Work with the dough, kneading it until it can be handled, dust with flour and put in a warm quiet place for 2 hours to rise. Knead lightly again and let rise a second time for 1 hour. After the second rising, shape or braid the dough into 3 long loaves. Bake at 350F for 20 minutes. Reduce heat in over to 325F and bake for 40 minutes more.
