1In a large bowl combine flour and sugar. Cut in butter until crumbly.Set aside 1/2 cup for topping. Add baking soda, cinnamon, and cloves to remaining crumb mixture. Mix buttermilk and egg together, Stir into crumb mixture until just moistened.
2Fill greased or paper lined muffin tins 2/3 full. Sprinkle with reserved topping. Bake at 375* 18-20 minutes or until a toothpick comes out clean. Cool for 5 minutes before removing from pan.
3NOTE: You can use sour milk if you don't have buttermilk. Place 1 Tablespoon of white vinegar in a liquid measuring cup and add enough milk to make 1 cup. let stand 5 min.before using.
