lakota fry bread
Fry bread originated on reservations where Native Americans had to make do with the provisions they were allotted by the US government. This is a recipe I found, maybe 25 years ago, on a website with, among other things, Lakota customs, culture, history, and language. I have no idea now what the name of that site was, or if it still exists.

- 2 cups water or more if needed (just add until dough is elastic)
- oil or lard for frying
How To Make lakota fry bread
-
Step 1Mix ingredients and knead for 10-15 minutes. Let it rest for 10 minutes.
-
Step 2Make pieces 1/2" thick (thinner if thinner bread is desired). Poke a hole in the middle. Fry in oil until golden brown.
-
Step 3I know the directions are scant. I wrote them down exactly as they were on the page where I got this. Size of each piece is up to you; I made mine about 6 inches wide. The depth of the oil depends on what you cook them in. If it's not enough to submerge the dough, turn it once to brown both sides.
