I have used this recipe since the early 50s and it has never failed me. My family loves them with butter and jelly or gravy.

Ingredients

2 c
all purpose flour
3 tsp
baking powder
1 tsp
salt
1/2 tsp
baking soda
3 Tbsp
shortening
1&1/2 c
buttermilk

How to Make Biscuits

Step-by-Step

  • 1Preheat over to 350 degrees
  • 2sift together flour, baking powder, salt and baking soda
  • 3Cut in shortening with a shortening cutter or 2 knives
  • 4Incorporate the buttermilk all at once and stir just till moisten.
  • 5Pour dough out on a floured board or wax paper and knead 2 or 3 times. Don't over knead or will be tough.
  • 6Pat dough to about 1/2 inch thick. Cut dough with a cookie cutter into 10 biscuits. The last amount of dough, you can roll into biscuits with your hands.
  • 7Place biscuits on pan and bake in preheated oven set at 350 degrees for about 12 to 15 minutes.
  • 8NOTE: You may add 1 tablespoon of sugar to the dry ingredients when you sift dry ingredients together. If you don't have a cookie cutter, you may roll dough in your floured hands to make biscuits.
