I have used this recipe since the early 50s and it has never failed me. My family loves them with butter and jelly or gravy.

Ingredients

  • 2 cups all purpose flour
  • 3 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
  • 3 tablespoons shortening
  • 1&1/2 cup buttermilk

How To Make biscuits

  • Step 1
    Preheat over to 350 degrees
  • Step 2
    sift together flour, baking powder, salt and baking soda
  • Step 3
    Cut in shortening with a shortening cutter or 2 knives
  • Step 4
    Incorporate the buttermilk all at once and stir just till moisten.
  • Step 5
    Pour dough out on a floured board or wax paper and knead 2 or 3 times. Don't over knead or will be tough.
  • Step 6
    Pat dough to about 1/2 inch thick. Cut dough with a cookie cutter into 10 biscuits. The last amount of dough, you can roll into biscuits with your hands.
  • Step 7
    Place biscuits on pan and bake in preheated oven set at 350 degrees for about 12 to 15 minutes.
  • Step 8
    NOTE: You may add 1 tablespoon of sugar to the dry ingredients when you sift dry ingredients together. If you don't have a cookie cutter, you may roll dough in your floured hands to make biscuits.
