I spent several weekends trying to make really good biscuits. I finally got it right and here it is. You can do it!

prep time 15 Min
cook time 10 Min
method Bake
yield 6-8 serving(s)

Ingredients

  • 4 cups self rising flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon sugar
  • 1/2 stick chilled salted butter, cut into small pieces
  • 1 1/2 cups real buttermilk, not low fat

How To Make buttermilk biscuits, southern style

  • Step 1
Mix the baking powder and sugar into the flour with a fork.
  • Step 2
Use a pastry blender and cut the butter into the flour until it is crumbly.
  • Step 3
Make a hole in the middle of the mixture and pour in the buttermilk. Mix it with your hands until it pulls away from the sides of the bowl.
  • Step 4
Lightly flour a bread board or a clean counter.
  • Step 5
Put the dough on the board and knead lightly 3 or 4 times. Do not overwork the dough or the biscuits will be tough.
  • Step 6
Pat the dough down until you get your desired thickness. Cut with a 2 3/4 biscuit cutter. Put the biscuit cutter down firmly and then straight up, do not turn it after you have it in the dough.
  • Step 7
Bake in a pre-heated oven at 450 degrees for 10-14 mins.
