yield 2 dozen

Ingredients

  • 2 1/4 teaspoons active dry yeast
  • 1/2 cup lukewarm water
  • 5 cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 tablespoons granulated sugar
  • 1 tablespoon baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 3/4 cup shortening, cold
  • 2 cups buttermilk

How To Make angel biscuits

  • Step 1
Preheat the oven to 400 degrees F. Grease a baking sheet with butter, oil, or cooking spray. Sprinkle the yeast over the lukewarm water, and let it sit about 10 minutes.
  • Step 2
Meanwhile, add the flour, sugar, baking powder, baking soda, and salt to a bowl of a standing mixer. With the paddle, cut the shortening into the flour mixture until it resembles a coarse meal. Add the yeast and buttermilk and mix well.
  • Step 3
Work the dough on a floured surface and roll it out to a 1-inch thickness. Cut the biscuits into 2 1/2 inch rings.
  • Step 4
Place on the baking sheet and bake until golden. Let cool and cut in half. Pour yummy sausage gravy over, or use jelly, honey, or whatever you want.
