"This fancy looking (but-oh-so-easy-to-make) confection (our favorite kind!) features layers of dense yellow cake topped with meringue, cinnamon, and nuts; and a rich, creamy filling studded with fresh berries...."

INGREDIENTS
1/2 cup (8 tablespoons) butter
1/2 cup sugar
1/4 teaspoon salt
4 large egg yolks (save the whites for the topping)
1 teaspoon vanilla extract or 1/4 teaspoon Fiori di Sicilia

1 teaspoon baking powder
1 cup King Arthur Unbleached All-Purpose Flour
4 large egg whites
3/4 cup Baker's Special Sugar or granulated sugar
1/2 cup sliced, blanched almonds
1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon, optional
1 tablespoon sugar
your favorite pastry cream OR our favorite pastry cream (see "tips," below)
fresh raspberries, sliced strawberries, blueberries, or blackberries
4 ounces butter
3 1/2 ounces sugar
1/4 teaspoon salt
