Ohio is well known for their Sauerkraut Balls and now so am I, because my guests loved this! This tastes like a cheese dog with sauerkraut! I served this with yellow mustard for dipping. This recipe was posted on the Internet by a cook named Verondear.

Ingredients

  • 1 pound smoked kielbasa-minced
  • 1 large onion-minced
  • 1 tablespoon corn oil
  • 1-16 ounce can sauerkraut-well drained and finely chopped
  • 1-8 ounce cream cheese-softened
  • 2 cups bread crumbs, seasoned
  • 1 large egg-lightly beaten
  • 1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper

How To Make sauerkraut balls

  • Step 1
    Cook onion in a skillet with 1 tbls. oil, over medium high heat, until onions are soft, about 10 minutes. Drain and transfer to a large bowl.
  • Step 2
    Then mix the cooked onions,chopped sauerkraut, cream cheese, cayenne pepper and minced kielbasa together.
  • Step 3
    Cover and chill in the refrigerator approximately 2 hours.
  • Step 4
    Mix egg in another small bowl.
  • Step 5
    Place seasoned bread crumbs in a medium bowl.
  • Step 6
    Roll the chilled sausage mixture into 1 inch balls.
  • Step 7
    Dredge sausage balls, one at a time, in the egg mixture and then in the bread crumbs.
  • Step 8
    Bake sausage balls in a preheated 350F oven until golden brown (approximately 15 minutes)
  • Step 9
    This recipe makes about 44 balls. Serve with yellow mustard for dipping.
