I got this out of my Pioneer Woman Cooks cook book...I had these at the Texas Land and Cattle Co every time we go in and they are so good I also have a dipping sauce recipe on site here of which is my own sauce...I tried to come as close as I could to making the sauce they serve...Though there is a difference..but we like it...

Ingredients

  • 1 large
    onion, vidallia
  • 2 c
    buttermilk
  • 2 c
    all-purpose flour
  • 1 Tbsp
    sea salt
  • 1/4 tsp
    cayenne pepper (to 1/2 tsp)
  • 1 qt
    canola oil (to 2 quarts)
  • BLACK PEPPER TO TASTE

How to Make Onion Strings

Step-by-Step

  1. Slice the onion as thin as you can. Place in a glass baking pan and cover with buttermilk, let them soak for 1 hour.

    Combine dry ingredients and set aside.
  2. Heat oil to 375*.
  3. Throw a handful of onions into the flour mixture, shake any off excess, and place into the hot oil. Fry for a few minutes and remove as soon as they golden brown. Drain on a plate with a paper towel...
  4. They are fantastic with my Spicy Dipping Sauce.....
