Many years ago, someone in the family collected recipes from descendants of my great grandparents, William M. and Florence E. (Snodgrass) Whaley and had them compiled into a cookbook. I am posting those recipes here so that they will not be lost. This recipe was submitted by my Great Aunt Allene Palmer.

1 c
pickling lime
2 qt
8 c
2 Tbsp
1 tsp
celery seed
1 tsp
whole cloves
1 tsp
pickling spice

How to Make Aunt Allene's Sweet Pickles


  • 1Wash and slice cucumbers in 1/2-inch chunks.
  • 2Soak 24 hours in 1 gallon of water and 1 cup of pickling lime.
  • 3Rinse well in clear water, then soak for 3 hours in ice water.
  • 4Soak overnight in mixture of vinegar, sugar, salt, celery seed, whole cloves and pickling spice.
  • 5Boil 35 minutes and seal in hot sterilized jars. these are better when served chilled.
