The first time I made this a couple of years ago, I wondered how this was going to turn out. It turned out good the first time, and then every time after that. I love it, and I hope you will too.

yellow cornmeal
3/4 c
self-rising flour
1 tsp
1/2 tsp
1/2 tsp
cayenne pepper
small, sweet onion, finely chopped
jalapeno, finely chopped
green onions, sliced thin
large egg, beaten
1/4 c
grated cheddar
1 c

How to Make Hot and Spicy Hush Puppies


  • 1Preheat deep fryer to 375 degrees F. (If you don't have a deep fryer, you can use a cast iron skillet, or a deep-sided electric skill or even a pot with oil, just check the temperature of the oil with a thermometer)
  • 2Mix all the ingredients together into a large mixing bowl to form a thick batter.
  • 3Dip 2 tablespoon spoons into water. Using the spoons scoop up some of the batter and drop into the hot oil. ( You can skip this part if you want, and just use a flatware tablespoon and scoop the batter into the oil).
  • 4Work in batches. Fry for 3 to 4 minutes or until golden and brown. Remove and drain on a paper towel lined sheet tray.
  • 5*Note* You don't have to add the jalapeno unless you want to. It will still taste good with the other ingredients.
