fried won tons by maggie
My Mom came up with this idea and served them many times over for New Years Eve appetizers. I have adjusted her recipe to settle on this little gem and it has always been a hit for as long as I can remember. It has inexpensive simple ingredients and it's easy to do. We always have these along with our leftover fried rice.

How To Make fried won tons by maggie
-
1Mix the meat, mushrooms and chestnuts together. Carefully blend in the bean sprouts, about 1/2 teaspoon of minced green onion and about a teaspoon of soy sauce. Note: Adjust the amount of green onion to suit your taste .. we like a lot of them so we add more.
-
2Lay a won ton wrapper out on your cutting board. Moisten the edges of the wrapper and then take about 1 teaspoon of the meat mixture and place it near one corner of the wrapper.
-
3Carefully fold the sides of the wrapper toward the meat then begin rolling the wrapper toward the opposite end. When you are finished you should have a tiny little cigar shape.
-
4An alternate way would be to place the meat mixture in the center of the won ton wrapper, moisten the edges and then fold like an envelope. Keep a towel over top of the completed won tons while you are assembling the remaining ones so they don't dry out.
-
5Heat about an inch of oil in a skillet or pot until it reaches about 325. Carefully lay the won tons - a few at a time - seam side down in the hot oil. Cook until golden then turn and cook the other side until golden brown.
-
6Transfer to a wire rack on top of a baking sheet and place in heated oven. Continue cooking until you've made all of them.
-
7Transfer to a paper lined plate, sprinkle lightly with fine salt and serve.
-
8You can eat these plain or use a dipping sauce. My favorite way is to use a little bowl with a squirt of ketchup and a puddle of hot mustard. I make the hot mustard by mixing a wee bit of water with Coleman's powdered dry mustard .. trust me it is spicy !
-
9NOTE: Double or triple the recipe if desired. I try to make only enough to eat at one meal as they are a little rough to re-heat unless you have an air fryer. Also .. the leftover won ton wrappers can be cut into strips or triangles and take only a couple of seconds to fry up into some really nice chips. Sprinkle some with fine salt or sprinkle some with sugar or cinnamon sugar for a sweet treat.
-
10HINT: While the amounts listed are small ..this does make a fair amount of won tons. If your grocery has a salad bar section I suggest you go there and get 1 or 2 mushrooms and a few bean sprouts and anything else you don't need a lot of. In the end you will save money and not be wasting food.
