I've had this recipe for years and haven't made it in a very long time. But I do remember how good these are. No leftovers here!

Ingredients For cocktail meatballs

  • 3 lb
    lean ground beef
  • 1/2 c
    seasoned bread crumbs
  • 2 md
    onions, minced
  • 4 tsp
    prepared horseradish
  • 4
    garlic cloves, crushed
  • 1 1/2 c
    tomato juice
  • 4 tsp
    salt
  • pepper to taste
  • SAUCE:
  • 1/4 c
    butter
  • 2
    onions, chopped
  • 1/4 c
    flour
  • 3 c
    beef broth
  • 1 c
    red wine
  • 1/4 c
    brown sugar
  • 1/4 c
    ketchup
  • 2 Tbsp
    lemon juice
  • 6
    ginger snaps, crumbled (optional)
  • 2 tsp
    salt and pepper

How To Make cocktail meatballs

    Preheat oven to 450.
  • 2
    Combine ground beef, bread crumbs, onions, horseradish, garlic, tomato juice, salt and pepper.

    Mix well and shape into 1" balls. Place in jelly roll pan and brown in oven for 10 minutes. Remove from oven and drain. Set aside.

    For the sauce: Melt butter in large skillet. Add the onions and saute until golden.

    Blend in flour. Add beef broth, stirring until smooth.
  • 6
    Stir in remaining ingredients (red wine, brown sugar, ketchup, lemon juice, salt and pepper, and ginger snaps.

    Simmer over low heat for 15 minutes. Add meatballs and simmer 5 more minutes.
