I think a moist, flavorful meatball starts with a combination of ground beef and ground pork sausage.
Apple butter adds some body and a bit of sweetness to the meatball sauce.

Ingredients

  • FOR THE MEATBALLS

  • 1 lb
    pork sausage
  • 1 lb
    ground beef
  • 1/2 c
    plain dry bread crumbs
  • 2 large
    eggs, beaten
  • 1/4 c
    milk
  • 1/2 c
    finely chopped onion
  • 1/2 tsp
    salt
  • 1/2 tsp
    black pepper
  • FOR THE APPLE BUTTER JACK SAUCE

  • 3/4 c
    mustard, spicy brown
  • 1/2 c
    apple butter
  • 1/3 c
    jack daniel's tennessee whiskey
  • 1/4 c
    brown sugar
  • 1 Tbsp
    cider vinegar
  • 1 Tbsp
    worcestershire sauce
  • ·
    salt and pepper to taste
  • ·
    tobasco sauce to taste

How to Make Sweet, Hot and Sour Mash Meatballs

Step-by-Step

  1. To make the meatballs: Heat the oven to 375. Combine all the meatball ingredients in al large mixing bowl. Blend well with your hands.
  2. Form the meat mixture into 1 1/2 inch balls. Place them on an ungreased baking sheet (with sides to catch the grease), or on a jelly-roll pan.
  3. Bake about 30 minutes or until browned and cooked through.
  4. To make the Sauce: Combine all ingredients in a large skillet. Stir until well blended.
  5. Stir in the cooked meatballs. Coat with the sauce and cook about 5 minutes until the sauce has thickened slightly.
    Serve with toothpicks.
  6. NOTE: The meatballs may be frozen and reheated at 350 for about 20 minutes.
