Ingredients
- 5 cups bread or all purpose flour
- 2 teaspoons sugar
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1 package active dry yeast
- 1 1/4 cups milk, warm
- 2 tablespoons butter, softened
- 1 1/2 cups sour dough starter
How To Make sour dough bread
-
Step 1Gently stir the starter to mix-do not shake, measure it out
-
Step 2Pour milk in a glass measuring cup and microwave 30-45 seconds to warm (Make sure it is not hot). In your mixing bowl, add the milk, sugar, salt and yeast, stir and let the yeast bubble for about 2 minutes. Add the butter, starter and 2 cups of flour and mix well with a spoon, I usually use a wooden spoon. Put your mixer bowl under your mixer with the dough hook attached. Add 3 cups of flour and mix slowly until all the flour is incorporated. Mix with your dough hook about 2 minutes or until smooth.
-
Step 3Once out of the mixer, lightly oil the top of your dough and cover with a towel and then set it in a warm place. Let it rise until double. Divide dough into 3 equal parts and shape into round or oblong loaves. Place on cookie sheet or prepared pans. Make diagonal slashes with a sharp knife on each loaf. Cover and let rise until double again.
-
Step 4Set a shallow pan of water in the bottom of the oven. Bake loaves at 400 for about 30 minutes or until they sound hollow when tapped. Cool on wire racks.
