Makes (3) 8" pans. Note: Dough maybe kept in refrigerator for a week or so. This was my grandma Elsie Goehle's recipe passed on to my mom. We would look forward to her making this every fall! She would make one of each: peach, apple and German plum aka prune.

Ingredients

  • DOUGH (FOR 3 KUCHENS)
  • 3 cups flour
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 2 tablespoons sugar
  • 1/2 cup shortening
  • 1/4 cup scalded milk
  • 1 - yeast, cake
  • 1 tablespoon sugar
  • 3 large eggs, beaten
  • 1 cup milk
  • FILLING (FOR 1 KUCHEN)
  • 1 large egg, beaten
  • - fruit, cut up, prunes,peaches or apples
  • - sugar
  • TOPPING (FOR 1 KUCHEN)
  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 2 tablespoons flour
  • 1/3 stick margarine
  • 1 teaspoon nutmeg
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon

How To Make rich german kuchen

  • Step 1
    Combine flour, salt, 2 tbsp. sugar and shortening as for pie crust. After scalded milk has cooled, mix with yeast and 1 tbsp. sugar. Mix eggs and milk together Combine yeast mixture with egg/milk mixture; add to flour. Place in a greased bowl; let rise in refrigerator over night.
  • Step 2
    In 8" round or square baking pan, put 1/3 of dough in each buttered pan. Let rise until light (about 2 hours).
  • Step 3
    Spread beaten egg over dough before filling with fruit. (It takes about 4 peaches or 3 apples or 6-7 German plums aka prunes for one kuchen) Arrange cut up fruit on that, then sprinkle with sugar and use the remainder of the beaten egg. Mix crumb topping ingredients together with hands and sprinkle over top of kuchen.
  • Step 4
    Bake at 300 for 45 minutes.
