old fashioned nut bread

Another antique recipe which I love. The recipe asked for "sweet milk" i.e. whole milk but I know that any milk would work just fine.

yield 4 small loaves. Pan size: 6 x 3.5 x 2 inches.

Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup shortening
  • 1 cup sugar or to taste
  • 1 cup whole milk (non-dairy milk will work just fine)
  • 1 teaspoon 1 teaspoon
  • 2 1/2 cups flour
  • 2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 4 - egg whites
  • 1 cup chopped nuts

How To Make old fashioned nut bread

  • Step 1
    Preheat oven to 350 degrees.
  • Step 2
    In a large mixing bowl cream together shortening and sugar. In a separate bowl, whisk flour, baking powder and salt.
  • Step 3
    Add the flour mixture to the sugar mixture a little at a time, alternating with the milk.
  • Step 4
    Add vanilla and egg whites. Combine well. Make sure to scrape the sides of the bowl. Fold in nuts.
  • Step 5
    Pour into prepared bread pans and bake for 30 minutes or until a knife inserted in center of loaf comes out clean.
  • Step 6
    Cool slightly in pans and then remove to cooling rack.
