How to Make Elizabeth’s Whimsical Wassail Punch

Step-by-Step

  1. Heat oven to 350 and wash apples and oranges. Score each apple on several sides and place on baking dish. Press 6 to 8 whole cloves into each orange, spacing them around the orange decoratively. Place oranges on baking sheet with apples and bake 40 minutes in oven or til skin of apples start to split and soften. While fruit is baking in large pan on top of stove, heat cider, allspice berries, ground nutmeg and ground cinnamon til mixture begins to foam; reduce heat to very low. Add one of the sliced lemons to the heated mixture. Let rest on simmer. Once the baked fruit is done, get it out and let it rest for a few moments out of the oven. Put punch bowl where you want to serve. Remove lemon slices from cider. They won’t be very pretty at this point. Carefully pour warm cider into punch bowl. Slice other lemon and remaining orange and add slices to the cider in the punch bowl. Put in cinnamon sticks. Add baked apples and oranges. Serve warm. If you like more sweetness, you may add a few tablespoons of brown sugar in the cider while cooking. If you like more tartness, add extra lemon slices to the cider while cooking.
