This is sort of a "copy-cat" recipe... Have you ever tried McDonald's Hot Chocolate Peppermint Mocha? Well, I have, and I wasn't too impressed. So I went home and made my own and I think this is much better! This is a richer, creamier, and less costly version of the popular McDonald's product. I love McDonald's, but I have trouble spending $4 on a hot chocolate! Don't you? When you have kids, it all adds up! Also, if you are preparing this for the kiddos, cut back on the espresso powder! You will thank me later.

This is a great alternative to spending the big bucks for this delicious holiday treat. Warm and yummy, this hot chocolate has a hint of peppermint and espresso flavor. We tried both water and milk. With milk, it's richer and creamier. But both are delicious on a cold day. It's basically Christmas in a cup!

Ingredients For hot chocolate peppermint mocha

  • 12-14 oz
    water
  • 1 1/2
    envelopes of your favorite hot cocoa mix (I use Swiss Miss)
  • 1 tsp
    instant espresso powder
  • 3 to 5
    drops peppermint extract, to taste
  • whipped cream, marshmallows, peppermint candy (optional)

How To Make hot chocolate peppermint mocha

  • Water boiling in a tea kettle.

    Add water to a tea kettle and bring to a boil.
  • Hot cocoa mix and espresso in a glass.

    Add cocoa to a large mug. Add espresso powder and mix.
  • Adding hot water to the glass.

    Pour boiling hot water into the mug and stir until all is dissolved.
  • Pouring in a few drops of peppermint extract.

    Add the peppermint extract and stir.
  • Whipped cream melting on the Hot Chocolate Peppermint Mocha.

    Serve with any topping you like. For instance, whipped cream, a peppermint candy cane, shaved chocolate, marshmallows, etc. Enjoy!

    Variation: To make it a little richer and creamier, use milk instead of boiling water. Also, don't forget this can be made for diabetics! Buy a sugar-free hot cocoa mix. They are out there and are very good! You may just have to dispense with all the toppings... but just a bit of unsweetened whipped cream won't hurt. ;-)
