Whenever I make this, everyone raves about it. And the leftovers are even better. I've even used the leftovers in taco salad.

Ingredients For sloppy joes

  • 1 lb
    ground turkey or chicken
  • 1 sm
    onion, chopped
  • 1/2 - 3/4 c
    catsup - enough to coat the meat without being too runny
  • 1 Tbsp
    dijon or honey dijon mustard
  • 2 Tbsp
    brown sugar, more or less to taste
  • 1 Tbsp
    worcestershire sauce
  • 1 Tbsp
    chili powder
  • 1 Tbsp
    paprika
  • 1 tsp
    ground cumin
  • 1/2 tsp
    garlic powder
  • 2 Tbsp
    apple cider or rice vinegar
  • salt & pepper to taste
  • hamburger buns, whole wheat
  • sliced reduced-fat american cheese (optional)

How To Make sloppy joes

    Brown meat in skillet sprayed with non-stick spray over medium-high heat. Break up meat with spatula while cooking so you don't end up with huge chunks of meat. Add chopped onion when meat is about 1/2 way browned. Saute until onions are translucent. Drain excess fat if necessary.

    Add catsup, brown sugar, mustard, chili powder, paprika, cumin, garlic powder, Worcestershire sauce and vinegar, Stir to coat meat. Add salt and pepper to taste. TASTE to make sure it's not too sweet or too tart.

    Let simmer for a few minutes to combine flavors. Serve on buns with sliced cheese if desired.
