My Mom started making these in the mid-70's (we think... and probably from a woman's magazine like BH&G or Good Housekeeping) and they have been my favorite of the 10-15+ varieties that Mom makes every year. Perfect Christmas cookie, a buttery log filled with pecans and red & green candied cherries, rolled in coconut (the "whiskers"!), chilled, sliced, and baked. Sometimes we slice them 1/4", sometimes thinner, but they are wonderful with tea.
