My mother's cousin did a rudimentary family tree back in the 40s or 50s. She claimed that we were related to "Betty Crocker." For years I believed this. In fact, my mother often joked that that's why she was such a good cook and baker. When I started researching on my own I discovered there is no such person as Betty Crocker. However, there was at one time a series of radio personalities/spokeswomen who acted the role of Betty Crocker. This is probably who my mother's cousin was referring to, though I was never able to find any proof.

There is also a story that my one French ancestor was "kidnapped" by Indians and lived among them for seven years before making his escape. No proof, just that statement in the family history.

Boy, were YOU busy!! And you have extra good reason to be very proud of all your hard work too. I am proud of you! WTG!
The grandparents put their’s together just like you did. I am glad a few of the family members truly understood the gift they received and have read it over the years. Unfortunately, they are not keeping it up as requested by the parents.

Any stand out characters? DH had a few...

Catie, I did most of my research years before we had the Internet. I did it the old fashioned way, by haunting the libraries, looking at miles of microfilm, writing to county clerks' offices, visiting cemeteries.

My ex DH’s paternal grandparent’s did a thorough genealogy in the ’70’s. So many interesting and intriguing people! I tried to do same, but my family was mostly gone and my mother did not remember much. I talked to one great aunt, but that was it. I know those companies online can help, but they are costly. I wonder about their accuracy too.

It is on my to do list. oh yea, that will work! ;)

I did quite a lot of genealogy research in the 80s after my mother passed. Actually it wasn't until then that I took much of an interest. But you're right, the research and what we learn is fascinating!

This one is very similar to my maternal grandfather’s Tartan! I have been trying to find more info on him and his Scottish origins.
Interesting isn’t it to research these things!?
