Most date square recipes out there suggest to put sugar in with the dates, but I skip this step since dates are sweet enough!!
These were also a big hit when I had my catering service and was Piccolo Grande's best seller :)

In a saucepan, boil the dates and water and simmer for about 5 minutes, stirring constantly with a wooden spoon until the dates are pureed. Let cool.
In a bowl, combine oats, flour, brown sugar and baking soda. Add butter and mix well.
Spread half of the crisp in the pan and press firmly. Spread the date mixture. Cover with remaining crisp and press lightly. Bake about 35 minutes or until crisp is golden brown. Cool on a wire rack, remove from pan and cut into 16 squares.
