Bobbie's Notes:

I've had several people tell me these are the best cookies they ever ate. The perfect chewy brownie cookie with the crisp edges. Delicious!

Comments from the Test Kitchen: Kitchen Crew

The flavor of these cookies is oh-so amazing! We first tried them were still warm from the oven. The chocolaty gooeyness was to-die-for. And guess what... after they cooled they were still equally addictive!

Directions

1
Preheat oven to 375. Place sheets of foil on countertop for cooling.
2
Place brown sugar, shortening, water and vanilla in a large bowl. Beat at medium speed with mixer until well blended. Add eggs 1 at a time and beat well.
3
Combine flour, cocoa, salt and baking soda. Add to shortening mixture and beat at low speed JUST UNTIL blended. Stir in chocolate chips.
4
Drop by rounded measuring teaspoons 2 inches apart onto ungreased baking sheet. Bake one baking sheet at a time at 375 for 7 to 9 minutes. DO NOT OVERBAKE.
5
Cool 2 minutes on baking sheet then move cookies to foil.

Has anyone tried these with butter instead of Crisco?

I think butter will make these more crisp... my local food store makes these and they sprinkle them with powdered sugar for a nice effect.

I am wondering how well it would work to use applesauce in place of Crisco? We use applesauce in all of our baking to lower the fat content and have not had any trouble yet. Have not done pie crusts though as am sure it would NOT work at all for that.

My mobile post didn't come thru...I did try these with butter and they're not quite as good because yes, they are crispy. Applesauce, I have no idea.

Maybe I could try half butter, and half Crisco like I do for my chocolate chip cookies.

Are we able to substitute butter for Crisco in this recipe?
