Candy's Notes:

Before I tried this recipe I was skeptical. I mean how could saltines ever turn into toffee? Well I'm a skeptic no more. This really is a wonderful treat that keeps well in the fridge and actually seems to taste better after a few days.

When this was in the oven it reminded me of the candy shops in New Orleans where they make their own candy. You would never know this was made with saltines; It looks like a fancy candy you would buy in a candy store. The perfect blend of salty and sweet!

I have a friend that used to make something similiar with graham crackers but, honestly, I like this much better. For the second batch I made, I lowered the temp to 350 and shortened the cooking time to 5 min. Turned out just to my liking! This will be added to my holiday goody baskets. It is inexpensive to make and is sure to impress!!

Directions

1
Preheat oven to 400°F. Line a 15x10x1-inch baking pan with foil or parchment paper. Place saltines in even rows on lined baking pan.
2
Melt butter and sugar in saucepan over medium heat. Continue cook on medium-high heat until butter is completely melted and mixture is well blended, stirring frequently. Bring to boil; boil 3 min. without stirring. Spread evenly over crackers. (Note: this is the only tricky part. A friend advised that if you use a full cup of butter it's much easier to spread but I've stuck to the 1/2 cup measure).
3
Bake for 7 minutes. Remove from oven and sprinkle with chopped chocolate or chips is using and allow to stand about 5 minutes so chocolate can melt.
4
Spread melted chocolate evenly over ingredients in pan; sprinkle with nuts. Cool and break into pieces. Store pieces in refrigerator.

This is a really good, kind of addictive treat Bonnie. Just warning you. I was so surprised at the results when I first made it.

There are many variations on this recipe. One uses butterscotch chips and I've think I saw one that used shortening in some way. I believe this is the basic recipe though and it's good as is. :)

Yes these are so good and addicting!!! We always make it at christmas time (but you really can make it any time) We have always called it Christmas Crack (yes because it is addicting) This is really close to the way we make it too except I leave off the nuts. This is a great recipe!! Every one should try it! Good Recipe to post Candy!

I've made this candy many times. The versions I make are called Chocolate Crack and Vanilla Crack.(Thank you, Joanne Fluke). I have also experimented and used many different types of "chips" on top. All are very, very good and always a hit.

Looks like I've fallen behind in the life, recipes and times of Hannah Swensen in Lake Eden, MN. I see the crack recipes must be from the latest book "Apple Turnover Murder". Gotta get caught up. Oh and I see there's another new book to be released next month. Thanks Avery for reminding me of this series. I have some reading to do.

Cheri, great idea about the mini M& M's. Yum.

There are so many variations of this saltine or sometimes graham cracker toffee. The first time I tried it I had found the recipe in the Kraft Food & Family magazine when they still sent out hard copies for free. Well I lost that recipe in my great Trojan virus computer crash. So I had to start all over again trying to recreate it. I was amazed, and somewhat aghast, at how many different ways there are to make this stuff. It's all good though, isn't it?
