Pat's Story

This is the recipe that was developed during World War II, when many foods were rationed, this cake has topped the list of most requested recipes for over 75 years.

miracle whip salad dressing not mayonnaise
1 c
granulated sugar
1 tsp
2 1/4 c
sifted cake flour
1/2 c
baking cocoa
1 tsp
baking soda
1 tsp
baking powder
1 dash(es)
3/4 c
cold water
8 oz
pkg. philadelphia brand cream cheese, softened
1 Tbsp
1 tsp
1 dash(es)
5 c
powdered sugar, sifted
3 oz
(1 oz. each) squares unsweetened chocolate, melted

Directions Step-By-Step

Preheat oven to 350^. Grease and flour or spray two 8-inch layer pans.Set aside.
Combine salad dressing and sugar. Blend in vanilla. Add sifted dry ingredients to salad dressing mixture alternately with water, mixing well after each addition. Pour into prepared pans and bake for 25-30 minutes. Cool 10 minutes; remove from pans. Frost with:
Chocolate "Philly" Frosting:
Combine cream cheese, milk, vanilla and salt. Mix until well blended. Gradually add the sifted powdered sugar. Stir in melted chocolate. Spread between and sides of cake ,frosting top last.

Pat thank you for posting this recipe,I have been looking for it for years. This is the first cake I learned to bake. Love this cake. The frosting was just chocolate butter cream but I am going to try your.Thanks again.

My Mom always made this on Valentine's day and instead of Chocolate frosting, added cherry juice (from Maraschino cherries). It was delicious-THANK YOU for sharing! Brings back awesome memories!!
