When my girls were younger our Girl Scout troop would go to a Native American Indian Pow Wow. They would make the most amazing Fry Bread. In the fry bread they would put taco meat, lettuce. tomato, cheese and top it with sour cream.. For dessert they would make the dough a little sweeter and added canned cherries and powdered sugar. I thought of these and found this recipe. I made them last night and my daughter said "oh mom this brings back such great memories'.
1Combine flour, baking powder and salt in a large mixing bowl. Add warm water in small amounts and need dough until soft but not sticky. Sometimes more flour or water will be needed. Cover bowl and let stand for 15 minutes. Pull off large egg size ball of dough and roll out unto round about 1/4 inch thick. Punch hole in center piercing several times with fork to allow dough to puff.
2In heavy skillet fry (deep fry) rounds in lard or other shortening until bubbles appear on dough, turn over and fry on other side till golden brown.
3Indian Taco is made by cutting a pocket in the fry bread with cooked hamburger meat (with added taco seasoning), shredded lettuce, shredded cheese, chopped onions & diced tomatoes. Cover the top with red or green chili sauce according to taste
