This is a recipe that has been in my family for many years. I thought it would be nice to post it as a Valentine's Day suggestion, to form it in the shape of tiny hearts, some with red hots pressed into the candy as a surprise.

For Valentime's Day, shape the pieces into heart shape, adding a red hot candy piece in the center of the heart, or a liquorish arrow that crosses the heart. Be creative! Enjoy this wholesome very old-fashioned candy that those who lived during a depression era ate.

Place sugar, milk and butter in a heavy pan, and cook 'till it reaches soft ball stage. Mix in: 1 pound cut up dates 1 pound cut up nuts Stir quickly and roll in a towel that has been dusted with 10X (powdered) sugar (to keep it from soaking into the towel). Cut into slices and put in canister.

This is very sweet between the sugar and sweetness of the dates, so I slice it into 1/4" slices. You can "mold" it into special shapes, like hearts for Valentines Day because it's almost like Play Dough. Because of the sweetness, usually one piece meets my sweet craving. Kudos to Aunt Mae, who died many, many years ago. She grew up on a farm, with few conveniences, but I think of her as a hardy, almost mountaineering woman. I am proud she was part of my heritage.
