Kinda weird how salt or rock salt is used to aid in cooling something, yet it's used outdoors to MELT something...

I just put the ice in a glass and pour my drink into my glass! Woolah!

I work in a restaurant where one of our cold buffet bars broke down. Filling base with ice and water was not enough to keep food at temp, so I suggested adding salt (think ice cream maker) and we have not had to toss any more salads due to temperatures. Works great!

Kay Brasher's tip is good, Irene Peters, but her tip takes 15-20 minutes; the ice and salt takes two minutes.

Great idea! Never thought about adding salt, but it does make sense! Thanks!

Just be careful where you empty the salt water. It will kill the lawn, contaminate lakes and ponds and rust your drains if not washed out well.

Looks like a good idea, but I would not want to bother with the rigmarole of ice and salt, as we seldom have ice on hand. Therefore Kaye Brasher's idea of paper towel etc is more appealing to me. Thanks for sharing though.

Wet a paper towel and wrap around the can or bottle. Put in freezer for 15-20 minutes and it will be ice cold. Do this every morning before work. Put in lunch bucket with freezer pack and Still ice cold at lunch time!!!

Brilliant idea. When my husband goes hiking on Sunday he always grab couple cans of soda before he leaves. I just put in the freezer but I like this idea. Thank you.

I remember when I was young (late 1950's) my Mother during the summer time would make homemade ice cream. One of the steps was to mix rock salt with the ice (in ice cream maker) to keep it from melting. Thank you for the tip above it brought back great memory. God Bless!

Thank you so much for this tip. I needed this a few weeks ago when I was charged with bringing the drinks to a family picnic and couldn't add the drinks to the cooler/ice until I arrived. We added water to the ice, but didn't know to add salt. Next time I will be prepared! :-)
