Yes! You heard it right! I got this recipe from a friend from Germany. She said she grew up eating and enjoying it as did my family. We have it for a whole meal sometimes, since it contains plenty of protein, vegetable and a starch. We often toss a salad on the side (and dessert if there is room for it). I hope your family enjoys it as much as we do.

Ingredients

  • 3 pounds onion, chopped
  • 3/4 pound bacon, diced
  • 1/2 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/2 -1 teaspoon lawry's seasoned salt (more or less to your taste)
  • 5 large eggs, separated
  • 12 ounces sour cream
  • 1 - 2 tablespoons butter (more or less to your taste)
  • 1 - unbaked 9
  • 3/4 cup shredded cheese of choice (optional)
  • - pepper to taste

How To Make onion pie

  • Step 1
    Saute onions and bacon pieces. Drain. Add seasoning.
  • Step 2
    Beat egg whites until it forms stiff peaks.
  • Step 3
    Beat egg yolks and stir into sour cream. Add to onion mixture, stirring well.
  • Step 4
    Fold egg whites into onion mixture, but do not over stir.
  • Step 5
    Pour mixture in pie shell. Dot with dabs of butter.
  • Step 6
    Bake at 350 degrees for about 45 minutes or more depending on your oven or until golden brown and eggs test done when tested with knife.
  • Step 7
    If desired, you may add shredded cheese of your choice (pepper jack is good) to top of baked pie and return it to oven until cheese is melted.
